Evergreen mare Moscow Red chalked up career win number thirteen with less than three weeks remaining in her eleven-year-old season. On the eve of entering a remarkable tenth racing season, the daughter of Road To Rock is showing no signs of stopping, her lust for racing clear to see as she fought doggedly to prevail in the wet at Bendigo.
Jockey Neil Farley allowed his galloper to settle in the second half of the field from Bendigo’s mile chute, navigating off the rail on the home bend but still with five lengths to make up on the leaders. The job was still ahead of her at the furlong pole, but a determined surge from the hundred-metre mark saw Moscow Red overpower her rivals, earning a deserved win on the back of strong performances leading in.
Farley praised the mare’s will to win post-race.
“She hit a flat spot and was going up and down on the spot for a little bit, but the last two-hundred she really knuckled in and found the line well.
“She was in for the fight”.
Henry too was full of admiration for his veteran mare.
“She really is an old marvel…tough as old boots”, he said.
“She could’ve easily thrown in the towel late when the pressure came on, but she really pinned the ears back and wanted to be there and wanted to attack the line”.
Henry lamented a lack of wet tracks in the past two seasons, however expressed confidence that there are more wins in store for his rising twelve-year-old with suitable conditions expected over the coming months.
Moscow Red’s thirteenth career victory sees her close in on half-a-million dollars in prizemoney after ninety-three starts, and you’d be brave to suggest she won’t surpass that mark later in her preparation.
