OMG Snitty Kitty can fly

When Henry Dwyer took an unraced Snitzel filly by the name of Oh Em Gee to the Wangaratta trials last year he did so because he was worried the filly would embarrass the stable if he trialled her closer to Melbourne.

‘’She showed us absolutely nothing. She was backwards and giving us very little. It’s hard to believe now,’’ trainer Henry Dwyer said from the winner’s stall at Caulfield on Saturday

After the trial, which she won by eight lengths, some of the filly’s owners were concerned that the name could be taking God’s name in vain with the OMG acronym, so they changed it – to Snitty Kitty – and on Saturday Snitty Kitty announced herself as one of the new star speedsters when she raced clear to win the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint.

She didn’t only beat some of the smartest horses around – she walloped them by two and a quarter lengths and in doing so smashed the race record by more than a second and went with .3 of a second of Lucky Secret’s track record of 55.97s.

‘’I’ve never had a horse simply improve out of nowhere like her,’’ Dwyer said. ‘’Usually the good horses show something to start but we started on a very low base with her.’’

In the 15 months since that trial at Wangaratta, Snitty Kitty has raced 11 times for six wins and more than $380,000 in stakes. She might not add to that tally this spring as Dwyer is considering sending her to the paddock so she can return in the autumn and chase the 1100-metre Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.

‘’There’s not a lot left for her this spring as we don’t want to push her out to 1200 metres and the Oakleigh Plate really looks the race for her to win a Group 1.

‘’She’s by no means found her mark yet. She ran a race record here on her ear. She’s very dynamic and untapped.’’

Jockey Beau Mertens enjoyed the experience thoroughly.

“She is a pleasure (to ride). I’ve had one other ride on her before and she’s done the exact same thing so she’s a pretty easy ride.”
