Darley Goodwood Lucky Liberty Ready to make most of Chance in Group 1 at Morphettville

A TRIO of Adelaide jockeys lead the race to ride richly talented Victorian sprinter Lucky Liberty in Saturday’s Group 1 Darley Goodwood at Morphettville.
First emergency Lucky Liberty has emerged as a surprise contender for the $1 million feature after being elevated to the starting line-up following the withdrawal of brilliant SA mare Viddora with a hoof issue on Thursday.
Lucky Liberty’s trainer Henry Dwyer said he would wait until the last minute before declaring his choice of jockey but nominated Dom Tourneur, Joe Bowditch and Paul Gatt as leading contenders.
Tourneur recently returned to the saddle after a trackwork fall, while Bowditch is the regular rider of Viddora. Gatt has been booked to ride Karlovasi in the Goodwood but there’s a good chance that four-year-old will instead run at Flemington.
“We don’t really have to make a decision until scratching time on Saturday morning,” Dwyer said. “We’ll wait to see if any more come out then see what our options are … but more than likely it will be one of those local riders.”
The mount would certainly be a prized one, with Dwyer predicting Lucky Liberty was primed for a forward showing in the Goodwood.
“I reckon he’s as good as we’ve ever had him,” the trainer said. “He’s a horse who’s had a number of soundness issues. But we’ve been training him down the beach this preparation and he’s in terrific order. We always thought he had Group 1 ability but we weren’t sure he was ever going to get there because of his issues.
“We seem to be on top of them now and this seems the preparation to have a crack at those good races.”
